La Habra - Dist 56 |
8-5 |
The newly-constructed
District 23 all-stars, consisting of players from Canyon Hills, Chino National,
and Ontario Mountain View, faced off with the powerful La Habra Yankees. After
two innings of scoreless ball, District 23 broke through with three runs thanks
to an RBI double by Junior Zamano. Hits by Brandon Woodward, Orrin
Hancock, and Trevor Sturgill scored five more runs over the next two innings and
gave District 23 an 8-0 lead going into the 6th inning.
Woodward started the game on
the mound and had been shutting out La Habra, but he tired in the 6th, giving up
5 runs until Jamie Higuera was called upon to close the game. Higuera retired
the last two batters in the 6th and all three in the 7th to secure the 8-5 win,
and post a save. |

La Habra - Dist 56 |
10-3 |
La Habra fought its
way back through the loser’s bracket and faced District 23 again in the
sectional championship game. This time District 23 broke out quickly with five
runs in the 1st inning. Orrin Hancock opened the game with a stand-up
triple, Mario Granados doubled in two runs, and Rudy Bravo singled home two
more. La Habra came back with three runs in the third off Junior Zamano who
started for District 23. In the 4th inning, District 23 added four more
runs highlighted by a double from Hancock. District 23 also added another
run in the 6th.
Trevor Sturgill replaced
Zamano on the mound and held La Habra to just one hit and no runs over the last
four innings. The Section 6 championship belonged to District 23 when the last
La Habra hitter dribbled a comeback grounder to Sturgill who threw him out. |

Dist 24 |
1-5 |
District 23 came out
flat and got behind early in their game against District 24. Giving up 2
runs in the first and another in the third, the District 23 team looked to get
back in the game in the top of the fifth. Having scored one run already,
two runners were on base when Trevor Sturgill drove a pitch to the right field
wall. The District 24 right fielder was able to make the catch and
District 23 gave up another 2 runs in the sixth before taking their first loss.
Mario Granados pitched a
strong game for the District 23 team. |

Dist 42 |
5-1 |
The District 23 team once again started slowly in their
second round game. Two errors and a passed ball helped District 42 get on
top in the bottom of the first inning. From there the story was all about
pitching, as Trevor Sturgill no-hit District 42 through 6 innings.
District 23 did not fair much
better in their first 3 innings as the District 42 pitched was perfect.
But in the fourth, after 2 outs, Trevor Sturgill and Mario Granados were hit by
pitches. Matt Acosta then beat out a booted ball by the second baseman and
a subsequent throwing error helped to score two runs. In the top of the
fifth, after a pitching change, walks to Nick Compton, Corey Gerritse, and Chris
Fort loaded the bases. After another pitching change, Junior Zamano and
Jeremy Davis were each hit by pitches to push across 2 more runs.
Sturgill continued on his
quest, walking 1 batter in each inning from the fourth through the sixth, but
helped by a double play in the fourth he gave nothing else up. In the
seventh, Jamie Higuera led off with a walk, and Zamano notched the game's first
hit with a double for an RBI. Sturgill later singled for District 23's
only other hit.
In the bottom of the seventh,
the drama was short lived as the District 42 catcher singled to begin the
inning. But a quick 4-3 double play got the game under control, and Acosta
closed the game with a fantastic sliding catch of a foul pop-up. |

Dist 24 |
14-11 |
The District 23 team took out the lumber in pounding out
16 hits and beating District 24 by a score of 14-11. The scoring starting
in the second inning as Matt Sale led off with a home run, and Junior Zamano
added an RBI later with an infield single. Three more runs were added in
the third on a 2-run single by Chris Fort, with Corey Gerritse adding another
run on an error by the District 24 catcher.
District 24 scored single runs
in the second and third innings, before District 23 added four of their own in
the top of the fourth when Matt Acosta hammered
a three-run home run, and Sale scored again following a double and two passed
balls. District 24 scored 2 more runs in the fourth, but Acosta ended the
threat by picking off a runner at first. District 23 then came back in the
fifth to build its lead to 13-4 with another 4-run inning. Following
singles from Jeremy Davis, Orrin Hancock, and Junior Zamano, Trevor Sturgill
produced a run with a ground ball, Mario Granados added another with a sacrifice
fly, and Acosta grabbed two more with a single.
Starting pitcher Craig
Balonick started to struggle in the fifth as District 24 mounted their comeback.
With on-out and the bases loaded due to two walks and a hit batter, Davis took
the mound. Davis struggled with control problems as well, as 3 runs
crossed the plate without the benefit of a hit, but once again Acosta ended the
threat, this time picking off a runner at second base.
With some momentum going their
way, District 24 escaped the sixth inning without giving up a run, despite a
double from Davis, and once again started a rally in the bottom of the inning.
A leadoff home run followed by a hit batter and a double with one out, brought
Jamie Higuera to the mound. Higuera also struggle some in allowing a
double and a walk before completing the inning with District 24 having scored
four times and cutting the score to 13-11.
But in the seventh, District
23 once again took control, scoring in the top of the inning on a single from
Granados and an RBI double from Sale. Zamano took the mound in the seventh
and closed out the game for District 23. |

Dist 46 |
1-3 |
The District 23 team was eliminated from the Division 3
tournament by District 46-Anaheim by a score of 3-1. The District 23 team
got another strong pitching performance as Corey Gerritse battled through
situations in every inning, allowing single runs in the first, third, and fifth.
Despite hits from Matt Acosta,
Jeremy David, Orrin Hancock, Junior Zamano, and Gerritse, all District 23 could
manage for runs was a fourth inning homerun from Trevor Sturgill,
cutting the lead to 2-1. |
