Game 1
Upland American
6/29/06 |
0-12 |
The Canyon Hills 12 yr olds had a formidable task
in their first game, going against a strong Upland American team that had reached the District 23
tournament finals in each of the last 2 seasons.
Falling behind early, Canyon Hills struggled to stay in the game as a 3-0 deficit became 6-0 after
two innings.
The bats were quiet for Canyon Hills throughout, as only Joey Antos could manage to reach base, with
a third inning bunt single.
After Will Peckham held Upland American scoreless in the third inning, thanks to an Antos double-play, the
game unraveled for Canyon Hills in the fourth as Upland American scored 6 more runs on just 2 hits.
The game was shortened to 4 innings due to the 12-0 score. Upland American's pitcher recorded 8
strikeouts and no walks in pitching the one-hitter.

Game 2
Ontario Central
7/5/06 |
4-2 |
Canyon Hills battled Ontario Central in a tight
pitching duel during their second game. Joey Antos took the mound for Canyon Hills and didn't
allow a hit through 3 innings.
A walk to Will Peckham and a single by Patrick Verga went unrewarded in the
1st. In the 2nd, Canyon Hills was able to push across a run as Antos led off with a walk, stole
second, and advanced to third and home on passed balls. Walks to Tim Rangel in the 3rd and
Andrew Santoyo in the 4th provided no additional scoring as Canyon Hills took a 1-0 lead into
the bottom of the 4th inning.
Antos struck out 2 in the bottom of the 4th, but a hit batter and 2 walks
loaded the bases with 2 outs. A high chopper eluded the Canyon Hills infield as 2 runs scored
for OC.
Down 2-1, Canyon Hills could not ignite anything in the 5th, as they were
retired on just 5 pitches. Peckham took the mound in the 5th, striking out 3 straight batters.
Facing tournament elimination, Canyon Hills got a lead off single
from Rangel in the 6th. Brett Burton singled Rangel to 3rd and Antos brought him in with a
ground out to tie the game before the inning would end. Peckham recorded 2 quick outs in the
bottom of the inning, but 2 errors put runners on before Burton could end the threat by throwing
the lead runner out while trying to steal 3rd base, to force the game into extra innings.
A one out double by Peckham, and a wild pitch gave Canyon Hills a threat
in the 7th. Following a Danny Cantwell walk and stolen base, Verga put Canyon Hills ahead with
a grounder and Rangel singled in Cantwell for a 4-2 advantage. Peckham shut the door in the bottom
of the 7th on just 8 pitches to gain the victory. Antos and Peckham combined to allow no hits and
strike out 11.

Game 3
Ontario Eastern
7/8/06 |
4-1 |
Canyon Hills got off to a quick start in
their game vs Ontario Eastern. Will Peckham singled to lead off the game and was sacrificed
to second by Danny Cantwell. Consecutive one out singles by Patrick Verga, Tim Rangel, an
RBI single by Brett Burton, and a 2 run double from Joey Antos gave Canyon Hills a 4-0 early
lead. But only Jake Hickerson being hit by a pitch in the 2nd, Luc Coronel drawing a walk in
the 4th, and Cantwell hitting a single in the 5th would get Canyon Hills any runners for the
remainder of the game.
With the offense being limited, the team turned to Rangel on the mound to
keep the game in hand. Allowing 2 hits in each of the first 2 innings, Rangel escaped without
allowing any damage, and Canyon Hills took their 4-0 lead to the bottom of the 4th. A lead off
double, wild pitch, and ground out produced a run for OE. With a two out double and hit batter
providing them additional life, but a sliding catch by Hickerson in centerfield put an end
to the threat.
A fly ball error in the 5th provided OE some additional excitement, but the
batter was thrown out trying to take 2nd base, and Rangel shut the door retiring the side in
order in both the 5th and 6th innings, having struck out 6 for the game while giving up 6 hits
and no walks in the complete gave victory.
