Ontario Eastern
6/23/06 |
8-0 |
The Canyon Hills Senior
All-Stars started strong with an 8-0 victory in their first game. Jumping
to an early 3-0 lead in the first, Canyon Hills continued to add to their
advantage throughout the game.
In the bottom of the first with 2 outs, Michael Orris got the team
started with an RBI single to score Ruben Diaz. After Kyle Ginter scored
on a balk, Dylan Ellsworth scored Orris with a double. Jarred Negast
walked and Jake Himes bunted for a single to load the bases, but Ontario Eastern
was able to escape for the time being.
In the second Jack Schellin produced an RBI grounder to score Kevin Cho who had
singled. Diaz followed with a home run to put Canyon Hills up 5-0. A
double from Ginter, walk by Orris, and Ellsworth reaching on an error failed to
produce any additional runs.
Singles from Himes, Artie Ortiz, and Cho boosted the lead to
6-0 in the third inning as Diaz shut down Ontario Eastern on 2 hits over the
first four innings.
In the 5th, Cho took the mound and continued the shutout
effort in getting 3 outs on just 8 pitches. Following an Ortiz single and
stolen base in the bottom of the inning, Cho homered to take an 8-0 lead.
The 6th inning saw Ontario Eastern mount the lone rally of
the game, but a 6-4-3 double play from Ortiz, Drew Thomann, and Zack Patton
ended the threat. Chase Doerr double with two outs in the bottom of the
6th, but Canyon Hills couldn't add to their lead.
Cho completed the combined 4-hit shutout in the 7th as Canyon
Hills captured the victory. |

Game 2
Montclair
6/24/06 |
2-0 |
Again pitching and defense
were the name of the game as Canyon Hills Seniors scored a 2-0 victory over
host Montclair and are yet to be scored upon.
After not scoring in the top of the 1st, Canyon Hills'
Dylan Ellsworth took the hill. The inning started slowly...After walking the
lead off batter, in typical Ellsworth fashion, he promptly picked him off of
first base, however an errant throw during the rundown allowed the runner to
reach second, where he would stay. After a ground out to Kyle Ginter at third,
who held the runner, Ellsworth struck out the next two batters.
In the 2nd, Canyon Hills continued their aggressive
style on the bases as Ginter lead off with a line shot to left but was thrown
out attempting to stretch it into a double. Dan Rosales added a single, but no
runs crossed the plate. In the bottom of the inning, Montclair threatened with
a lead off hit, but again Ellsworth set them down with a fly out and 2 K's.
The third inning saw Canyon Hills get on the board. Jake Himes drew a lead off
walk, and following 2 outs he had reached third. Jack Schellin then hit a ground
ball to the Montclair third baseman...hustling hard down the line Schellin forced
an errant throw on a very close play and was called safe...with Himes scoring.
Montclair tried to get even in the bottom of the inning putting 2 on with 1 out.
Ellsworth got a ground ball fielder's choice and struck out the Montclair clean up
hitter to end threat, Canyon Hills leading 1-0.
The fourth inning saw no action from the Canyon Hills bats, but Montclair threatened
again. After an error moved and an errant pick off attempt put a runner on second
with one out, Ellsworth got the second out with another K. Quick defensive play from
the Canyon Hills outfield prevented the runner on second from scoring as the next hitter
reached on a double. With two on and two out, Ellsworth K's the next batter to end the threat.
In the 5th, Himes led off with base hit, and moved to 2nd with 2 outs. Once again,
with two outs, Schellin delivers the run, this time with a single up the middle to
score Himes. Ruben Diaz followed with a single to put two runners on base, but a Kyle Ginter
towering fly ball to deep center was caught against the fence for the 3rd out. In the
bottom of the inning, Montclair once again put runners on 2nd & 3rd with 2 out, and
once again Ellsworth K's the final batter to end the threat.
In the 6th, Jarred Negast singled, but no threat surfaced.
Montclair drew a one out walk, but Zack Patton scooped up a shot down the first
base line, stepped on 1st, and threw to Artie Ortiz at 2nd base calling "tag".
Ortiz handled the throw, and applied the tag on a sliding base runner for the
double play.
Schellin added a two-out double in the
7th, but the score remained 2-0. In the bottom of the 7th,
Montclair had one out with one on when Ortiz set up to field a ground ball up
the middle...snagging the ball and stepping on 2nd, Ortiz threw to first to
complete the double play and complete the victory for Canyon Hills.
Ellsworth gained the complete game, shutout victory, going
all 7 innings, giving up only 4 hits while striking out 10. |

Game 4
Chino National
7/5/06 |
12-2 |
Pitching and hitting were the name of the game as
Canyon Hills scored a 12-2 victory over Chino National. The bats were alive as Canyon Hills
tallied 12 runs on 9 hits.
In the 1st, the scoring started early as Kevin Cho reached first on a dropped 3rd strike and
Jack Schellin followed with a single to right. Kyle Ginter hit a grounder with Chino National
forcing Cho at 3rd. Ruben Diaz followed with a sharp grounder to the 3rd baseman who misshandled it,
and an errant throw allowed Schellin and a hustling Ginter to score. The inning ended on a Daniel
Rosales shot down the right field line with the Chino National right fielder making an incredible diving catch.
Chino National came back to tie the game with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Canyon
Hills looked to break it open in the second. With 2 outs, Dylan Ellsworth was on base via a walk, when Canyon Hills
got in the mood for a 2 out rally......Cho singled, Schellin singled to score Ellsworth and Ginter was hit by a
pitch, bringing up Diaz with the bases loaded. With a 1-2 count, Diaz deposited line drive over the right field
fence for a Grand Slam Homerun! Rolsales followed with another single, but the rally ended with Canyon Hills
taking a 7-2 lead.
In the 3rd with 1 out, Ellsworth and Artie Ortiz singled, Cho forced Ortiz at second, but then stole second putting
runners on 2nd and 3rd. Schellin walked on 4 pitches loading the bases, this time for Ginter, who was hit by a pitch
for the second time in the game scoring Ellsworth. Chino National avoided any more damage from the bases loaded
threat, but Canyon Hills led 8-2.
Rosales walked in the 4th, but the score remained 8-2. Then in the 5th, Canyon Hills looked to score enough to end
the game early and preserve thier pitching. With 1 out, Drew Thomann drew a walk, Schellin was hit by a pitch, and
Ginter singled to load the bases. Up comes Diaz, again with bases loaded, and he drives the first pitch high and deep
to right...this time off the wall for a double scoring Thomann and Jarred Negast(running for Schellin), just missing
a second Grand Slam. Ginter is then tagged out at the plate, following a fielder's choice off the bat of Rosales.
Up by a score of 10-2, and needing 2 more runs for the 10 run mercy rule, Rosales stole 2nd, puting 2 runners in
scoring position. Following a Catcher's Interference with Michael Orris at bat, the bases where loaded for Chase
Doerr. With the count 1-1, Doerr lined a double into right center scoring Diaz and Rosales. Another hit by pitch,
this time Zach Patton, once again loaded the bases, but Canyon Hills was denied further scoring, taking a 12-2 lead
into the bottom of the fifth.
Diaz closed the door on Chino National in the 5th, pitching the complete 5 inning gem, allowing only 2 runs on 4 hits
and 2 BB, while striking out 10.

Game 5
Upland National
7/6/06 |
5-1 |
Pitching and timely hitting was the theme for Canyon Hills' 5-1 victory over Upland National.
Dylan Ellsworth started the game on the mound for Canyon Hills' retiring Upland National in
order in the first inning with 2 K's and a fly out. Looking to take an early lead in their half
of the inning, Kevin Cho walked for Canyon Hills and quickly stole 2nd and 3rd. Cho then scored
on a Jack Schellin ground out to the 3rd baseman.
In the second inning, after surrendering a lead off hit, Ellsworth retired the next 3 batters
on 2 K's and a pop out. Once again, wanting to extend their lead in the bottom of the inning,
Daniel Rosales led off for Canyon Hills with a single, and a steal of second. An errant thrown
off a Jake Himes grounder to short, allows Rosales to score with Himes safe at first. Himes then
stole second with Michael Orris up to bat. With a 1-1 count, Orris hits a deep ball to left for
a 2-Run homerun! Canyon Hills wasn't done yet. Following an Ellsworth single, and an out at second,
Artie Ortiz doubled, and scored as Cho reached on an error. Still pushing to extent their lead,
Cho was thrown out attempting to steal 3rd. A walk to Schellin, who eventually
was balked to third,
put another runner in scoring position, but he's stranded there as the inning is completed.
Canyon Hills' 5-1 lead will stand for the remainder of the game as Ellsworth pitches a 4-hitter,
with 8 K's and no walks.

Game 6
Chino Hills
7/7/06 |
6-5 |
Canyon Hills looked to take on cross-town rival Chino Hills, with the winner advancing to the District
23 Finals.
Canyon Hills put Kevin Cho on the mound to start the game, retiring the side on 10 pitches. In the
Canyon Hills 1st, they look to take an early lead as Cho starts with a base hit. But he's picked off.
With 2 outs Kyle Ginter strokes a base hit, and following with a count of 1-1, Ruben Diaz deposits
the ball to straight away center for a 2 run homer. Zach Patton, and Jarred Negast then add hits, but
are left on base as Canyon Hills ends the inning up 2-0.
Cho continued his strong start in the 2nd, retiring the side on 11 pitches. Canyon Hills then added
to their lead in their half of the inning, following an Artie Ortiz walk, and pick off,
Cho hits a home run! Later, a Jack Schellin single, and Ginter reaching on an error could not be
cashed in, as Canyon Hills led 3-0.
More Cho in the 3rd as he retires the side on 10 pitches. Canyon Hills has Diaz lead off the 3rd with
a single, but another pick off prior to a Patton double keeps the score at 3-0.
Chino Hills finally gets to Cho in the 4th with a single and a home run to cut the lead down to 3-2.
An Ortiz walk, Drew Thomann sacrifice, and Cho single get a run back for Canyon Hills in the bottom
of the 4th. Schellin walks and runners reach 2nd and 3rd, but no further scoring is done.
Cho gave up another hit in the 5th, but retired the side on just 7 pitches. Then loaded the bases in
the 6th, but escaped with a 4-2 lead as Canyon Hills was also kept from scoring even though a Schellin
single and Ginter double provided a threat.
In the 7th, Chino Hills mounted a comeback. A lead off walk forced Cho from the game. Ginter walked
3 more to load the bases and force in a Chino Hills run, which would bring Diaz to the mound. An error
allows 2 more Chino Hills runs to score and give them a 5-4 advantage. Diaz strikes out a batter and
then fields a grounder and starts a double play as Canyon Hills runs down runners off third and then
second to end the inning.
With their tournament lives on the line, Canyon Hills came to bat in the bottom of the 7th. Negast
led off with a walk, and advances on a pick off error, but gets thrown out at 3rd, as Canyon Hills
attempts to sacrifice him over. With Ortiz now running at 1st, Jake Himes strokes a single into left
field and is followed by a Thomann single to load the bases. A grounder from Cho, results in a force
at the plate and puts Canyon Hills one out away from elimination with the bases still loaded. Schellin
steps to the plate and delivers his third hit of the game, a single to right scoring Himes and Thomann for the win!
Canyon Hills eliminates Chino Hills in thrilling fashion and heads to the District 23 Finals!
