Game 1

Upland American

6/23/08

3-0

The Canyon Hills 10/11 year old All Stars started their first game against a tough opponent with a strong pitcher who struck out 10 of the Canyon Hills team. But Travis Booth didn't let them down easy either.  He struck out 7 of their batters and pitched 5 2/3's innings allowing only a hit to his final batter.

Canyon Hills got on the board when Konnor Zickefoose started off the 3rd inning with a double hit deep into left field.  Preston Gurrola was up next with a shot up the middle to score Konnor.

In the 4th inning Bryan Roe reached first after being hit by a pitch. Ryan Wilcox reached first on an error which scored the fast running Roe and advanced Wilcox to 2nd.  A great stolen base run advanced Wilcox to 3rd and put him in scoring position. Up to bat next was Trevor Esse and his well placed hit over the first baseman  earned him a single and a RBI to score Wilcox. Bottom of 4 puts Canyon Hills up 3 to 0.

Ryan Wilcox came in in the 6th to relieve Travis Booth, after he reached his pitching limit for the night, to strike out the next batter to give Canyon Hills the win. Konnor Zickefoose had a great night going 3 for 3.

Game 2

Chino National

6/26/08

7-6

The 2nd game for the 10/11 year old stars was Intense with a capital "I".
A single from Ryan Wilcox started off the 1st inning, followed by a beautiful bunt by Brett Rehrer and an overthrow by the Chino National 3rd baseman to first helped to score Wilcox and move Rehrer around to 3rd base. Konnor Zickefoose's well placed single scored Rehrer followed by Preston Gurrola's hard-hitting triple that scored Zickefoose. Speed and a great coaching call caught Chino National off guard when Gurrola stole home. Top of the 1st gives Canyon Hills a 4 run lead.

Ryan Wilcox comes to the mound, backed by a strong defense, that knocked out batters 1,2 and 3. In the 2nd inning, an excellent up to bat by Rehrer earns him a walk. Zickefoose comes up with a tremendous double to score Rehrer and bring Canyon Hills to 5 runs. More strong defense keeps Chino National down to only 2 runs in the 2nd and 3rd with great plays by Zickefoose, Lynch, Adam Kim, and Booth for a great infield effort with the outfield backing them up every step of the way.

In the 4th, Wilcox reached 1st with a fielder's choice. Trevor Esse was up next with a hard hit single that would move Wilcox around to scoring position and ready for Gurrola's single that would score him, giving Canyon Hills a 6-2 lead in the 4th.

And here comes the Intensity.......
With only 3 outs to go in the bottom of the 6th, Chino National turns up the heat and scores 4 to tie the game. With an exceptional job by Wilcox in 5 1/3 innings, he is relieved by Gurrola, with 2 outs to go to get out of the inning. Zickefoose, Kim and Lynch execute a phenomenal double play to get us out of the inning with a chance to score in the 7th.

Bryan Roe started the ball rolling in the 7th with a fumbled ball by the shortstop to reach 1st.  Taking advantage of a passed ball moves him to 2nd and ready to go when Kim's double brings him over to 3rd. Travis Booth's walk loads up the bases with Wilcox coming up to bat. A non-executed fielder's choice scores Roe with Canyon Hills ending the 1st half of the 7th inning breaking the tie by 1 run.
Gurrola threw heat in the 7th to strike out three and give Canyon Hills the win at 7-6. Whew!

Game 3

Upland Foothill

7/2/08

13-11

Double Whew!! The Canyon Hills 10/11 year old All Stars had it all tonight, phenomenal pitching by Travis Booth and Trevor Esse, hot hits by the entire line up and brilliant base running made for another exciting game.

The first inning, first batter Ryan Wilcox, gives the first pitch a ride for a double and sets the tone for the rest of the game.  Brett Rehrer up to bat next puts him on base with a single.  A fielder's choice finds  Konnor Zickefoose on base with  Preston Gurrola up next.  A deep fly ball to right gives Rehrer the opportunity to tag up and reach home and put Canyon Hills on the board.  Christian Lynch's hard
hit double brings Zickefoose home to give the boys 2 runs for the 1st inning.

Not to be outdone, the Upland Foothill team had a 2 run homer to bring the game even after 1 inning.

Bottom of the 2nd and Booth strikes out batters 7, 8, and 9 to keep this game even.

Now, say this all in one breath because here's where the fun begins! Rehrer reaches first, followed by an error by the centerfielder that gives Zickefoose first base, Gurrola comes up for a single to score Rehrer, manager Rick points out a catcher's interference to give Lynch a base, Jared Hoogeveen comes up for a single to score Zickefoose, Esse's sacrifice fly to right allows a tag up by Gurrola to score another run, Andy Kim snags a RBI hitting in Lynch and Wilcox's single scores a pitch running Isiah Vargas giving Canyon Hills a 7-2 lead after 2 1/2. Breathe!

Booth strikes out another 2 in the 3rd along with a foul tip caught by Hoogeveen holds the Upland Foothill team down by 5.

Two quick defensive outs in the 4th by the Kim and Lynch duo give Canyon Hills hope for a quick out of the inning. A few walks, a single, a couple of doubles and a home run later finds Canyon Hills down by 2 after 4 innings. Booth turns the mound over to Trevor Esse after 3 2/3 innings with 6 strike outs.

Kim starts off the 5th with a double followed by Booth's hard hit ball to a fumbling 2nd baseman to score Kim. Booth takes home after a single by Zickefoose and ties up this intense game.

Esse gives "K's" to the first two batters and a solid catch by Bryan Roe ends the 5th with the score still 9 to 9.

Top of 6 and her comes those bats again. Roe goes for a single followed by Esse. The boys advance after a bad throw from the 2nd baseman and puts the go ahead run on third and insurance on 2nd.  Kim's 2nd double of the night brings in Roe.  Wilcox, who went 3 for 5 tonight, has another single that moves the runners around.  Vargas' line drive to the first baseman earns him a RBI when Kim crosses the plate. Wilcox watches Coach Brennan's signs and steals 2nd and then
home to give Canyon Hills a 4 run lead.

Trevor comes to the mound and strikes out 2 before giving up back-to-back home runs. Not letting up, he throws a strike for a line drive to first baseman, Lynch, who beats the runner to the bag. Canyon Hills wins 13-11!!!

Game 4

Upland Foothill

7/5/08

18-11

YAHOO!!! The boys in black, red and white did it! They brought home the first ever District 23 Championship Title for the 10/11 year olds to Canyon Hills Little League. We are so very proud of them and here is how it all happened...

Up to bat first is our lead off hitter, Ryan Wilcox, who gets a single to start off the game. Next up, Bryan Roe, stays steady at the plate and earns a walk. An error by the 2nd baseman gives Konnor Zickefoose first to load up the bases. Preston Gurrola comes up to bat and gives the 2nd pitch a ride for a single and 2 RBI's. Christian Lynch goes for the 1st strike he gets and rips one for a single and scores Zickefoose. Brett Rehrer hits a ball to the shortshop and draws the ball to first while Gurrola runs in to put Canyon Hills up 4-0 in the 1st.

Upland Foothill comes up to bat with Gurrola throwing heat striking out 1st and last batters and a grounder to first baseman, Lynch, help to close the inning but not before Upland scores 1.

The 2nd inning Roe receives another walk just in time for Zickefoose's soaring triple that scores Roe. Gurrola up for another single scores Zickefoose to bring the score to 6-1.

Bottom of the 2nd and the crowd is silenced when Gurrola takes a hard line drive to his pitching arm that brought him to the ground still trying to make the play at first. He amazingly gets back on the mound and finishes the inning. The persistent Foothill team scores 2 more to make the score 6-3.

Top of three and singles from Andy Kim and Travis Booth leave the boys in scoring position for Roe, whose single scores them both and gives Canyon Hills a 5 run advantage.

Bottom of 3 and this where we all double our amount of gray hair! The hard hitting Upland team comes up with 3 singles, a double and with a little help from us scores 7 to give them a 3 run lead after 3 innings. Wilcox came into to relieve the ailing Gurrola, who did a phenomenal job pitching, to strike out 1 and catch a fly to end the inning.

In the fourth, the just outside pitches were getting the boys and we were still behind by 3.

The bottom of the fourth left a couple of Upland Foothill players on base with no chance to score.

Not to be outdone, our boys and their bats came alive in the 5th! You know the drill, take a deep breath and go... Kim started us off with a single followed by a towering home run over the right field fence for Booth. Wilcox earned first with a walk followed by two singles from Isaiah Vargas and Zickefoose. Gurrola's deep hit to right field, although caught near the fence, gave Vargas the opportunity to tag up and reach home. Lynch ups next gets a walk a puts runners on the corners. Trevor Esse swings for a double to score Zickefoose. Jared Hoogeveen slams one to deep right for a double and 2 RBI's. Kim up next scores a pinch running Rehrer, with lightning speed, from 2nd on a single. Middle of 5 and Canyon Hills scores 8 runs to double their score and take the lead 16-11.

Great pitching by Wilcox and a strong defense leaves a single runner stranded at 3rd and Upland still behind by 5.

Top of six and Canyon Hills wants a little more insurance. Zickefoose earns himself a walk, takes 2nd on a pass ball and tags up to reach 3rd after another deep fly by Gurrola is caught near the right field fence. Lynch comes up for his 2nd single of the night followed by a walk by Esse. Bases loaded and Hoogeveen goes deep to right again to score two more runs giving Canyon Hills a 7 run lead going into the bottom of six.

Wilcox on the mound gives an outstanding performance for a pitcher under pressure and strikes out the 1st, 3rd and 4th batters to win the game to a standing crowd.

A great team effort by all our boys and coaches. Now, on to the Section 8 tournament!

Game 5

District 21

7/12/08

9-1

With the district championship behind us, Canyon Hills comes out strong in the first with Travis Booth striking out batters 1, 2, and 5.

Canyon Hills, in the home team advantage for this first section game, came out batting the whole line-up in the first. Ryan Wilcox and Bryan Roe draw walks for Konnor Zickefoose's single shot that scores them both. Preston Gurrola comes up for a single and then steals 2nd and a bad throw from the Rialto Park catcher scores Zickefoose. Canyon Hills fill the bases to leave them on after 3 outs. Bottom of one and our boys are up 3 to 0.

In the 2nd, as the parents keep a close watch on the lightning in the distance, Booth comes out throwing only 16 pitches keeping the Rialto team to 0. Not to be outdone, the Rialto team knocks down 3 to keep us to 3 runs after 2 innings.

In the third inning, Canyon Hills holds strong refusing to give Rialto a run.

Another big inning for our boys in black and red in the 3rd. With our first two batters down and Trevor Esse landing 1st on a fielder's choice, Jared Hoogeveen comes out and gives the first pitch a ride for a line drive 2 run homer. Andy Kim follows with a single and Booth comes up for a double. With Wilcox earning his 2nd walk for the night the bases are loaded up. Roe has a well-placed single to score Kim and Booth. Zickefoose takes advantage of an error by the shortstop to snag first loading the bases again. Gurrola hits a high fly ball, that we all swear was leaving the park, within a few feet of the fence for a double that scores Wilcox and Roe. Giving Canyon Hills 6 more runs for a 9-0 lead after 3.

Top of 4 and Rialto gets their only hit of the night when the first batter hits a home run. Booth strikes out two and a grounder to first gets the 3rd out. Rialto holds strong in the bottom of the 4th to strike out 3, but Canyon Hills is still up 9 to 1.

Top of 5 and a few raindrops turns into a downpour. With the lightning getting closer and the hard rain, the umpires call the game and give the win to Canyon Hills after the required 4 complete innings of play.

Game 6

District 71

7/13/08

9-15

Our boys put up a valiant effort, but in the end it just wasn't enough. But here is how it went down...

The Vineyard team started off by waiving the coin toss and asking if it was alright if they just took the visitor's side. Worked for us, we like having the last word.

In the top of the first, their first batter, after going deep into the count, hits a homerun to start them off.  A single followed, but the strong Canyon Hills defense never let another run score that inning.

Our first ups and Ryan Wilcox draws a walk and Konnor Zickefoose's double scores the fast-running Wilcox to tie the game after one.

The second inning leaves Vineyard without a run due to strong pitching from Preston Gurrola and a powerful defense.  Likewise for us as our batters go down 1, 2 and 3.

The third inning and Vineyard scores two with a couple of singles and a couple of errors. Wanting to stay in step with our opponents, Wilcox starts off with his 2nd walk of the night. A pass ball brings him to second, but it really doesn't matter because big-guns Zickefoose launches one, and I mean launch, into the trees for
a two-run homer. End of three and the score is tied 3 to 3.

Fourth inning and the hard-hitting Vineyard teams comes alive with 2 doubles and a single to score 2 more. Being the competitive team that we are, we come back and
score 3 in the fourth. A single from Andy Kim, a double from Wilcox, Isaiah Vargas getting hit by a pitch, and a couple of missed opportunities by the Vineyard team and we are ahead 6 to 5.

The fifth inning, well let's just say that the scored a lot, and we will leave it at that. Behind 15 to 6 and we have our work cut out for us. Kim and Booth start us off with back to back singles and a 3rd walk of the night for Wilcox loads the bases up.  A
single from Gurrola scores one. Christian Lynch comes up and slugs two in with a double to get us a little closer to our opponents.

Great relief pitching from Kim and Zickefoose holds Vineyard to give us one more chance to play catch-up.  In the end it just wasn't enough and we lose our first game in the All Star season 15-9.

Game 7

District 49

7/14/08

14-2

Never say down with this team! The boys brought their "A" game tonight!

Ryan Wilcox starts us off with a single followed by Bryan Roe's single. A fielder's choice by Konnor Zickefoose, puts runners on the corners. Up next Preston Gurrola and he hits a line drive over the right center field fence for a three-run homer. A nice hit from Brett Rehrer lands him on first. A single from Isaiah Vargas moves Rehrer around and ready to use that lightning speed of his when the catcher makes a bad throw to score another run. Canyon Hills gets on the board early with 4 runs in the first.

A ball off the foot of Wilcox puts one on base for Apple Valley. He would get lonely out there when Wilcox strikes out the next three with his fastball and that wicked slider.

Top of two and Travis Booth reaches first on an error. I swear that boy has wheels when he gets the steal sign from his Dad, Coach Brennan, and steals 2nd and then 3rd when the pitcher wasn't looking. Roe reaches first after a catcher's interference call and just in time for the on fire Gurrola whose hard-hitting double scores Booth and Roe. Christian Lynch up next for a well-placed double to score Gurrola and after 2 finds our boys up 7 to 0.

More great pitching from Wilcox and another outstanding performance for the defense shuts down Apple Valley again.

In the third Booth lights up the field with his second homerun of the tournament to give us an 8 run lead.

With the first two batters going down in the third with "K's", Booth and Wilcox make a 3 to 1 play to end the inning.

In the fourth inning, great hits from Trevor Esse and Gurrola weren't enough to give us a little more cushion.

With just 62 pitches thrown in 4 innings, Wilcox and company knock down Apple Valley's offense in the bottom of the fourth.

Top of 5 and a pitching change from Apple Valley gives us only a single from Booth. But we are still up by 8 and feeling pretty comfortable.

The lower half of 5 and Apple Valley scores two when a high fly ball drops deep onto the right field line.

Coming into the 6th and the boys get off to a great start when Zickefoose earns himself a walk just in time for Gurrola's second homerun of the night over the same spot on the fence. Way to go Preston!! A walk from Rehrer and then Jared Hoogeveen takes advantage of an error landing him on first. Followed by doubles from Andy Kim and Booth to score 3 more. Wilcox swings for a single and brings Booth home to give Canyon Hills a 14 to 2 lead.

With just 11 pitches left of his 85 limit, Wilcox leaves Apple Valley without a hit in the 6th with 2 pitches to spare. A great night of pitching form Wilcox who completed 6 innings with 10 strikeouts and only 3 hits. A great game was played by the entire Canyon Hills 11 year old All Stars. On to the Section 8 championship game!

Game 8

District 71

7/15/08

7-10

We had Vineyard sweating in their cleats, unlike they have ever been before in this tournament.

Our bats were smart and strong with 7 walks and only 5 strikeouts the entire game.

Vineyard's request to keep the visitor's side in order to come out strong escaped them again. A lead off walk would remain the only batter to reach base as his teammates fell 1, 2, 3.

In the first, a walk to Ryan Wilcox and some swift base running on passed balls brought him to third for Preston Gurrola's single to score him. An error from a bad throw and Christian Lynch's reach to first on a fielder's choice brought Gurrola to third who took advantage of a pass ball to slide into home for a 2-0 lead against Vineyard.

Top of 2 and their lead-off batter goes deep for a home run. Only one more batter would reach base before the Canyon Hills defense stayed strong.

Bottom of 2, Jared Hoogeveen starts things off with a single.  A fielder's choice from Andy Kim knocks out Isaiah Vargas pinch running for Hoogeveen.
Travis Booth singles moving Kim to second and then a series of passed balls and errors scores Kim and Booth to give us a 3 run lead.

A fantastic job by pitcher Booth on the mound gives up one single in the third with two solid solo plays by Lynch at first and a great fielding play by Wilcox to make the throw to first to make the third out.

Bottom of three and our batters, with a walk and two great at bats, are knocked down by solid defensive plays.

In the top of the fourth, we consistently knocked down their runners with 3 straight fielder's choice plays.

Bottom of 4 and 8 batters come to bat, scoring 3 runs on walks, an error and singles from Booth and Gurrola to put us up 7 to 1.

For some reason with this team we have one inning that puts us trailing behind. Two home runs, two singles and questionable umpiring behind-the-plate gave Vineyard a one run lead.

The next two innings Canyon Hills' five sold hits were met with five solid defensive plays.  A two-run homer from Vineyard in the 6th and Canyon Hills loses 10 to 7.

Well, the end has come but not before this team has bonded with each other and have accomplished what no other Majors Division team from Canyon Hills has, winning District and playing in the Section Championship game.  The players played their hearts out.

Boys, we are all so very proud of you, and you should be proud of yourselves. Great teamwork!
