The Canyon Hills Jr.
All-Stars qualified for the Championship Round against Chino National on Tuesday night thanks to an impressive showing against Creekside
Ranch on Monday. It was Canyon Hills’ third consecutive win.
In a recurring theme of solid pitching, outstanding defense and equally
outstanding hitting, Canyon Hills’ got things going in their first at-bat.
Andrew Blyzca and Joey Antos reached base on consecutive errors by Creekside
Ranch’s shortstop. With one out, Andrew Stephens singled to load the bases.
Jordan Robinson then fisted an inside fastball to left field scoring Blyzca for
the game’s first run. That brought up Tim Rangel with bases loaded and he coolly
proceeded to hit the second pitch over the centerfield fence for a Grand Slam.
Rangel would also double to left later in the game.
Canyon Hills scored two more runs in the second inning. With one out, Blyzca singled and would steal second on Antos’ strike-out after a tough
at-bat. With two outs, Brett Burton hit a towering pop-up in the infield. In a
play indicative of his outstanding play throughout the tournament Blyzca,
running all the way, scored from second base when Creekside’s shortstop
misplayed the baseball. Burton would take second on the same play and
subsequently scored on Stephens’ double to left-center.
Canyon Hills scored again in the third frame as Derrek Toyota, after being hit
by a pitch to reach base, stole second. Daniel Diaz then doubled Toyota home for
the Hills’ eighth run of the game.
Also making important contributions were Luc Coronel who drove in a run late in
the game; Dylan Cox who collected a single and along with Brandon Nixon,
patrolled the outfield very well; the mid-infield play of Sean Ward and
Toyota; and the superb work of Burton behind the plate.
On the mound, Diaz his pitches well on the way to a 5-hit, 6 strike-out
outing over 5-1/3 innings. Rangel went the rest of the way in preserving
Canyon Hills’ fourth victory in the tournament. |
