Game 1
Montclair
6/26/10 |
16-2 |
The Canyon Hills 12-year-old All-Star team got off to a smoking
start against the Montclair team. Leadoff batter, Connor Airey,
reached first safely on a hard hit ball to shortstop. He scored
the first run of the game on a triple hit by Connor Houck. Tim
Nelson "took one for the team". Kobe Ramirez put the ball in
play, but Nelson got out on a fielder's choice. Successive hits
by Chris Choi, Brandon Dehnert, and Jordan Hernandez would keep
the scoring going. Connor Denton reached base and would score
on an impressive opposite field 3- run homerun hit by Brandon
Newton. Battting around the lineup, Houck and Nelson got on
base again in the inning. Kobe would come up again to hit a
double bringing the first inning score to 10 runs.
Newton took the mound in the bottom of the inning throwing
heat. He recorded two strikeouts. Nerves were a little on
edge and the defense gave up a couple of runs bringing the score
to 10-2 after 1 inning.
The scoring kept going for Canyon Hills in the second inning
started off by hits from Dehnert and Hernandez. The speedy Sean
Beck came in to run for Dehnert. Denton drew a walk. Newton
hit the ball hard again and reached safely on an unsuccessful
throw to the plate. Blake Slagle came in to bat and also
reached safely on a fielder's choice. Houck hit a single that
scored more runs capping off a four run inning.
Chris Choi took the mound and held Montclair scoreless for the
next two innings. He was helped out by strong defensive plays
by Nelson, Aaron McCann at third, and Sean Beck at second. He
recorded a strikeout and helped himself out by snagging a hard
hit comebacker.
Canyon Hills scored two more runs in the third. Hernandez walked
and Gabriel Amancio dropped a perfect bunt that induced a wild
throw to first base. Both runners moved into scoring position
on the wild throw and were driven in on a hit by Blake Slagle.
At the end of three innings Canyon Hills lead was 16-2.
Canyon Hills was held scoreless in the fourth inning. Brandon
Dehnert took the mound for Canyon Hills in the bottom of the
fourth and recorded three strikeouts to end the game in a mercy.
Final Score remained Canyon Hills-16, Montclair-2.

Game 2
Upland National
6/28/10 |
3-1 |
As anticipated, this game was a real pitcher's duel. Tim Nelson
held the rival Upland National team scoreless for the first three
innings. His pitch count started to get high and Kobe Ramirez was
called to the mound for the fourth inning. Ramirez pitched an
excellent inning, but the defense allowed an unearned run on a
couple of miscues.
Canyon Hills answered in the next inning with a run manufactured from
hustle. Connor Denton worked a walk. Brandon Newton then hit the ball
to the third baseman and was able to beat out the throw to first. With
Denton in scoring position, Newton baited the catcher into an errant
pick-off throw to first base that ended up in right field. Denton alertly
scored from second base on the throwing error.
Ramirez took the mound in the fifth and pitched another scoreless inning.
Canyon Hills could did not produce another run and the score remained 1-1
heading into the bottom of sixth inning.
Brandon Newton came in to pitch for Canyon Hills in the 6th inning. Newton
and the defense blanked the opposition and moved the game into extra innings.
Kudos should be given to the Upland National starting pitcher as he was able
to last into the 7th inning. That was due in part to the Canyon Hills batters
being very aggressive and putting the ball in play. Unfortunately most of the
hits were at the defense...Until the 7th inning.
In the 7th inning, Jordan Hernandez reached first base on a single to left
center. In the next at bat, Denton hit a triple to right field that scored
the hustling Hernandez. Newton came up to give himself an insurance run by
hitting a single, scoring Denton. 3-1
Newton returned to the mound in the bottom of the 7th. Newton and the
defense shut down the game.
Canyon Hills 3- Upland National 1

Game 3
Chino American
7/2/10 |
8-1 |
"Strike first, strike hard, no mercy."
Canyon Hills stuck to the strategy of being Visitor for the 3rd straight game.
Lead-off batter Blake Slagle started things off by putting the ball in play.
What seemed like a routine ground ball turned into a two-base error for the
speedy Slagle when the Chino first baseman could not make the catch. In the
next at bat, Connor Houck promptly launched the ball over the fence for a 2-run
homerun. Later in the inning, Kobe Ramirez lofted a fly ball to deep right field
that was mishandled by the outfielder and he ended up safely on second base.
Jordan Hernandez capitalized on the error with a base hit, scoring Ramirez from
second. 3-0 Canyon Hills.
Tim Nelson again took the mound as the starting pitcher. Nelson, with the help
of a strong defense, took a no-hitter into the 5th inning. He recorded 6 strikeouts
through the first 4 innings.
Canyon Hills was not done with the scoring. Although the team did not score in the
second, third, or fourth innings, the bats exploded in the fifth. Nelson drew a walk
to start the inning, and scored on a two run blast hit by Kobe Ramirez over the center
field fence. Jordan Hernandez hit a double to the fence in the very next at bat. Jordan
was brought in on a two-run dinger hit by Brandon Newton. (His second home-run of the
tournament.) 7-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Chino American broke up the no hitter with a single to start the bottom of the 5th.
The next batter hit a grounder, but an errant throw allowed the runner heading to second
base reach home safely. That would be the only run of the game for Chino American.
End of 5, score 7-1 Canyon Hills.
Top of the sixth, Nelson and Ramirez drew back-to-back walks. Nelson was able to score
on the next two fielder's choice outs hit by his teammates, Hernandez and Denton. 8-1
Nelson returned the mound in the 6th. The first out was recorded quickly, but the next
two Chino American batters hit singles. Nelson struck out the next batter for his 9th
strikeout of the evening. Awesome job, Tim. But the next batter walked, loading the bases.
Nelson reached his pitching limit and turned the ball over to Connor Denton with the bases
loaded. No pressure, right? Cool-Hand Connor struck out the next batter, preserving the
victory for Canyon Hills. Final Score Canyon Hills 8, Chino American 1
Moving to a record of 3-0 for pool play, Canyon Hills will be the Pool C leader. |
