The Canyon Hills Junior All Stars got
off to a quick start in their first game of pool play, by scoring 4 runs in the
top of the first inning. It turns out that the first run was all they would need,
as Joe Diaz pitched a no hitter, scattering 3 walks and two hit batters, needing
only 73 pitches in five innings. In a very balanced offensive attack, all twelve
Canyon Hills batters reached base safely, with nine different players having at
least one hit.

The Canyon Hills Junior All
Stars picked up another win with solid pitching coupled with a barrage
of 18 hits, winning 17 to 3. After a scoreless first inning, Canyon Hills
scored five runs in the top of the second, and single runs in the third
and fourth, to make it 7 to nothing.
Creekside Ranch got on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth.
In the fifth inning, Canyon Hills answered with one more run, while Creekside
scored two in the bottom of the inning, to make it 8 to 3. That was as
close as the game would get. Canyon Hills made the lead a little more
comfortable in the sixth with two more runs, and broke the game open in
the seventh with seven more runs.
Bryan Roe led the offense going 3 for 3 with two walks, while Brian Campbell,
Garrett Gomez and Jacob Cullers had three hits apiece. Bryan Harwood pitched
5 solid innings, giving up three runs on 4 hits. Tanner Runge pitched a
perfect 6th and 7th inning, striking out four.

The Canyon Hills Juniors
continued their winning ways with a hard fought 4 to 1 victory over a tough Montclair
team. Montclair’s defense was doing a good job of bending- but not breaking, as they
stranded eleven Canyon Hills runners during the game.
After a scoreless first inning, Canyon Hills scored two runs in the top of the second
inning on a walk to Joe Diaz, and consecutive two-out hits from Jacob Cullers, Brian
Campbell, and Tanner Runge. The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth, when
Canyon Hills scored two more runs on hits from Runge, Diaz, Garrett Gomez, and Jared
Hoogeveen.
Joe Diaz had another solid outing on the mound, pitching five scoreless innings, giving
up two hits and three walks, while striking out eleven. Tanner Runge came in to close
out the game, giving up an unearned run in two innings.

The Canyon Hills
Juniors closed out their pool play staying undefeated, beating Ontario Eastern
12 to 1. Canyon Hills scored four runs in the second inning, and never looked back.
Bryan Harwood pitched three solid innings to open up the game, allowing no runs,
two hits, and striking out three. Jared Hoogeveen, Jacob Cullers, and Tanner Runge
all pitched well in relief. The offensive attack was led by Stephen Hauck, who had
three hits, with Brian Campbell, Bryan Roe, Bryan Harwood, and Jacob Cullers
collecting two hits each. |

Canyon Hills took
their undefeated record into the Semi-final game against a strong Upland National
team. Canyon Hills got on the board in the top of the first, scoring one run.
Hits from Tanner Runge and Garrett Gomez, followed by a walk to Bryan Harwood,
loaded the bases. With two outs, Matthew De Los Santos pushed across a run with
a walk on a great 7-pitch at bat.
Nicholas Bernardo led off the top of the second with a double, which eventually
led to two more runs after an error, a walk to Garrett Gomez, and a single from
Bryan Harwood. After a scoreless third inning, Canyon Hills took a 4 -0 lead in
the top of the fourth, with a one out walk to Runge, followed by singles from Bryan
Harwood and Bryan Roe. Upland National answered with single runs in the fourth and
sixth innings, but that would be all they would get. Harwood pitched a solid 5 and
2/3 innings scattering six hits. Runge came in and got the final four outs, all on
strikeouts.

The District 23 Junior’s
Final pitted two undefeated teams, Canyon Hills at 5-0, and Chino National at 6-0.
Canyon Hills threatened in the top of the first inning, with Brian Campbell drawing a
lead off walk. Garrett Gomez hit a line drive to center, unfortunately, right at the
centerfielder for the second out of the inning. Bryan Harwood drew a two-out walk, to
put runners at first and second, with Bryan Roe at the plate. Roe hit a hard line drive,
but again, it was unfortunately right at a Chino fielder, this time the third basemen.
Chino National scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, putting Canyon Hills
behind for the first time in the tournament.
The Chino National pitcher retired Canyon Hills in order in the second and third innings,
while Chino National scored a single run in second inning. Canyon Hills' pitcher Joe Diaz
held Chino National scoreless in the bottom of the third, making the score 3-0 at the end
of three.
The Canyon Hills offense got going in the top of the fourth. Bryan Harwood drew a full
count walk with one out, followed by a single from Bryan Roe. Stephen Hauck then drew a
walk on seven pitches, to load the bases. Nicholas Bernardo then plated two runs with a single.
Chino National failed to score in the bottom half of the fourth inning. At the end of
four innings, Chino National led 3-2.
Canyon Hills scored two more in the top of the fifth. Brian Campbell led off the inning
with a double, and advanced to third on a balk. With one out, Garrett Gomez drew a walk,
and then stole second base. Campbell scored and Gomez advanced to third when Harwood reached
safely on a fielder's choice. Gomez scored the go-ahead run on the next at bat when Roe
grounded out to second. Going in to the bottom of the fifth, Canyon Hills was leading 4-3.
Chino National quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs
using three hits, four walks, and a couple of defensive miscues, which put Canyon Hills
down by six runs, 10-4.
With things looking bleak and momentum with Chino National, Canyon Hills refused to give up
easily, scoring four more in the top of the sixth. Stephen Hauck led off the inning by
getting a full count walk. This was followed by consecutive singles by Bernardo, Jacob Cullers,
Campbell, and Tanner Runge, resulting in four runs. This cut the lead to 10-8.
Canyon Hills kept the game within reach by holding Chino National scoreless in the bottom
of the sixth inning.
Down by two runs going into the top of the seventh, the Canyon Hills offense mounted one
more rally. Hauck again led off the inning with a base on balls, and advanced to second
on a fielder’s choice. Hauck scored from second when Cullers hit a deep single to right
center, cutting the lead to one run. Cullers advanced to second on another fielder’s choice,
but that was all the farther he would get, as Chino National was able to record the third out.
Joe Diaz and Tanner Runge both pitched well against a great hitting Chino National line-up.
Diaz pitched into the fifth inning, with Runge finishing the game.
In a wild game, that could have gone either way, Canyon Hills showed their character, by
coming back several times after it looked like they were finished, coming up a little short
against a solid Chino National team. |
